I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for my stop on the blog tour, which can be found at Donnie Darko Girl.
WANTED: DEAD OR UNDEAD was a huge surprise for me - it's become one of my favorite reads this year! Zombies and the Wild West? A unique combination that could be all kinds of awesome. Admittedly, I paid the most attention to the zombie aspect of the series and jumped at the chance to read this trilogy. Typically I avoid the Western section of the book store, but Scott gives a unforgettable rendition of the zombie apocalypse that is not only entertaining but tugs at your heartstrings at times as well.
Red has to be one of the most badass heroines I've encountered in an apocalyptic setting in a long time. Not only is she in the Wild West where there's all kinds of dangers such as wanted outlaws and inhospitable terrain, she's also in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. As if living out there wasn't enough to worry about! She handles herself like a pro and is a true survivalist - she knows how to stay one step ahead to stay alive. Already losing so much - her parents and two younger brothers - she decided a long time ago to never become involved with other people. Until Trace comes along.
He doesn't have the purest of intentions in the beginning, but I liked him right from the start. Never giving up on breaking through Red's walls, he does his best to show her she can trust him. I understood the way she felt about wanting to work alone - it's easier to not have to worry about helping out other people and caring about them only to possibly lose them. It's a lonely existence however, so I was thrilled when Red and Trace meet up.
The setting made for one of the most interesting aspects about battling the hordes of zombies - in a genre that's been done over and over again, it was refreshing this was set back in time of the Wild West. Even if you aren't a fan of the Western genre, I glowingly recommend you read WANTED: DEAD OR UNDEAD and give this novel five stars. I wish I could give it more! I'm looking forward to the next two installments to see what's next for these characters I've fallen in love with.
